Not too long ago, everybody had camcorders. It was how you kept a record of important events or exercised your creative skills by making home movies. At any given social gathering, it wasn’t out of place for someone to be running around with a camcorder, catching guests’ conversations or reactions.
Now that technology has evolved, however, camcorders have fallen by the wayside. With everybody having cameras on their phones and the ability to upload to social media instantaneously, there no longer seems to be a need for older and more cumbersome equipment.
But what people don’t realize is that camcorders have evolved as well, with names like Canon keeping the technology fresh and relevant against all odds. It’s time to embrace these oft-neglected models once more.
Take Canon’s VIXIA HF R72 camcorder, for instance. It’s a sleek and compact little video camera that captures full HD imagery while utilizing a ridiculous 57x Advanced Zoom so you can catch any little detail you want. With that kind of zoom power, however, it’s natural to wonder how shaky the video will end up being but with a SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer to constantly keep things smooth, you don’t even have to worry about that being an issue. It even works when you’re walking and shooting to give that faux Steadicam vibe. In addition, the Zoom Framing Assist helps keeps an object or person firmly in your view when shooting from a distance.
The HF R72 also has a Highlight Priority mode to make the colours in your videos look as vibrant as they do in reality. Plus you can always see the LCD screen clearly, even if it’s bright and sunny outside. All of your footage can either be recorded to the 32GB internal flash drive or, alternatively, to a removable SD memory card so it’s still easy to transfer your video to the computer and go from there.
If you want something a little more advanced, check out the VIXIA HF G40, which gives you everything you’d want as either an amateur or a professional videographer. The G40 gets by with an HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor that works very well in low-light situations and gets you great highlight and shadow detail, not to mention the impressive DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor. While it may be a little larger than the R72 model, it’s still compact enough to not be a pain to bring around and features a cool touch-capacitive screen and tiltable electronic viewfinder to make operating it a breeze.
Put down those smartphones and do some real video recording this Fall.
