We took for dead but there are still alive and kicking Atom processors, which is not going to see them giving life to “normal” gadgets such as phones, tablets, or computers. Its mission is now in power the Internet of Things, growing space that Intel will not want to get out of hand, as happened with the mobile world.
We have told some of the important innovations of the Intel Developer Forum ahead of the new season, and there are still many things to uncover on processors, but today we will dedicate a little time to Atom and the Joule system.
Joule is a small plate in which there is everything you need to develop a project IoT, which in the scene is called ‘system-on-a-module’. It is clearly designed for developers groped him and draw their chances juice before creating real products. For Atom is the brain of the plate.
Better plate, we could describe it as a development platform, and as would be otherwise, Intel is surrounding the peripheral and sensors that give meaning to projects that can be created in IoT. For now Joule and has a direct connection with cameras Intel RealSense (WiFi carry and capture video in 4K format).
Two variants for Intel Joule
The board has a really small size – 4.5 x 2.3 centimeters – for what can be done with it, you can see in the pictures. There will fit into two different versions, with different Atom processors:
- Joule 550x: Basic version has an Intel Atom 1.5GHz T5500 that works. RAM is 3GB (LPDDR4) and storage is 8GB eMMC type.
- Joule 570x: The top model features an Intel Atom T5700 and 4GB of RAM, memory is doubled to 16GB, also eMMC.
There are common specifications such as Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, a USB 3.0 port, and the ability to play with many interfaces (MPI, CSI, DSI, GPIO, I2C, UART). Both versions are designed to run on Linux.

In the first places where we find is smart eyewear that is developing PivotHead, then they come robots that are shaping in Canonical, Microsoft, and Vstone.Joule is not yet for sale, but there is little, it will be sold in September.
Looking ahead to the developers will sell a kit that includes an expansion board to work more comfortably with your computer: includes a 3.0 standard USB port and one Type-C, a microHDMI port, microSD card slot, dual WiFi antenna, and 30 – pin connector.
Nothing official price, but shopping is already seeing that the thing will walk for $ 370.
The new Atom seek your site
For despite the small size where they have to work, have more than the Cherry Trail performance that launched in 2015. A T5700 is 50% more powerful than a more powerful Atom x5-Z8500, and 10% an Intel Atom z34xx the “Edison” series, which was that Intel had initially devised for IoT.
Possibly reach more models than the T5700 and T5500, but the idea is that they are similar, to give life to products such as drones, robots and smart appliances. For upper echelons in power Intel has reserved a new family of Celeron and Pentium processors, under the name Apollo Lake.
The new Atom and Lake Apollo are based on the same architecture: Goldmont .Present a new graphics chip low – power Intel Gen9 worse able to play video in 4K format. They also introduce improvements in the speed memory bus and the possibility of supporting cameras that capture 60% more pixels, with a higher rate of frames.
