Gone are the days when free games were developed in Flash and were rather shooting singles. The free to play are something common for years we wanted to collect the best.
As in any list worth their salt they have been left out a lot of games, of course, but what you can be sure of is that any of these 17 free video games treasure a great quality and, above all, a lot of hours of fun.
There goes the list (in alphabetical order) …
DOTA 2
‘DOTA 2’, the MOVE of Valve, is undoubtedly one of the most popular free to play that we can find on PC. Heroes with skills, two teams of five players each and a sand in which to split your face to defend your base. If you also go with colleagues you can already say goodbye to everything else.
Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux
EVE Online
‘EVE Online’ was originally launched in 2003 and, for 13 years, it was running under subscription. In November 2016, to the delight of many, the game became free. Ideal to try if you like the MMORPG set in space. Of course, the whole part that can be played without paying has a number of limitations, but there it is.
Platforms: PC, Mac
Fortnite: Battle Royale
‘Fortnite Battle Royale’ is the game of the moment. Epic has managed to create a battle royale different from the others, very funny and, above all, in constant evolution. Each week brings news and has even come to include Thanos, the Marvel supervillain, in one of its temporary modes. Infinite fun without having to go through the box at all.
Platforms: PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, iOS
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
Four years has already been running ‘Hearthstone’, the Blizzard card game, long enough to have received a handful of expansions full of cards and evolve adding new mechanics every year. You can play online against players from all over the world, but also alone thanks to their adventures. And without paying a single dollar. Ideal to take a few games from anywhere thanks to its version for mobile phones and tablets.
Platforms: PC, Max, iOS, Android
Heroes of the Storm
We repeated with Blizzard, in this case thanks to his MOBA ‘Heroes of the Storm’ that was released in mid-2015. Dozens of heroes, classes, 5v5 arenas and a good handful of maps where you can fight without stopping.
Platforms: PC, Mac
Killer Instinct
Ok, this ‘Killer Instinct’ only allows you to control a character (Jago, which is not exactly maimed) if you do not go through the box, so what? You can throw him as many hours as you want without paying anything. And if you want more characters you can buy them separately or even the whole pack, that’s your thing.
Platforms: PC, Xbox One
League of Legends
Talking about free to play games and not include ‘League of Legends’ would be almost crime, so here you have it. Choose your champion and get fully involved in the battle, as simple as that. And complicated, because the game of Riot Games has behind a community not only very large, but ruthless. Prepare to suffer, especially if you have never touched a MOBA.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained
I do not know if anyone will ask why ‘Orcs Must Die’ comes out! Unchained ‘ in this list instead of another game more than your liking, but it is that it is hilarious. It’s a crazy tower defense with a magnificent artistic design and a refreshing sense of humor. Playing with friends is synonymous with looking at the clock and realizing that more hours have passed than you thought.
Platforms: PC, PS4
Paladins
If you do not decide whether to buy ‘Overwatch’ or not, maybe you want to try ‘Paladins’. The hero-shooter of Hi-Rez Studios may not have the magic of the title of Blizzard, whose designs are absolutely wonderful, but this is free. It has a card system to obtain a series of improvements that is not bad, and during the game you can improve various aspects of the character. It is very worth it.
Platforms: PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One
Path of Exile
‘Path of Exile’ is ideal for anyone looking for a title like ‘Diablo III’ without having to loosen even a single cent. In this sense it is a title that offers something different from what we can see in most F2P, and the truth is that given its quality is like not to let it pass.
Platforms: PC, Xbox One
Planetside 2
I have the feeling that ‘Planetside 2’ is one of those good free games that, for various reasons, end up going a little unnoticed. Correct me if I’m wrong. In any case, there you have this MMOFPS to shoot you whenever you want.
Platforms: PC, PS4
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Bioware and Star Wars together in a free MMORPG, I think we should not give much more data about ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’. If you do not try it, it’s really because you do not want to. And if you like it you also have the option to pay by subscription, which will give you some more juice.
Platforms: PC
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Another title that, over time, became free to play is ‘StarCraft II’. In this case you can play both the Wings of Liberty campaign, which is the base game, and the multiplayer for free. The rest of expansions are paid, but hey, with ‘StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty’ there are hours and hours of fun without going through the box.
Platforms: PC, Mac
Team Fortress 2
It matters little that ‘Team Fortress 2’ is one of the oldest titles on the list (it was released in 2007), as this Valve title is still a source of fun. You can spend a few dollars on cosmetic items, as in most F2P, but if you decide not to scratch your pocket you will enjoy the same.
Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, PS3, Xbox 360
Warframe
The ‘Warframe’ is an authentic chaladura. It is those F2P in which, when you have a few hours played, you wonder how it is possible to be free having such amount of content and options. Really, if you like third-person shooters with space ninjas that jump a lot, shoot, carry swords and use magic, try it. And if not, too.
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
War Thunder
An MMO with its air combat simulator touches is what ‘War Thunder’ offers in exchange for zero dollars, ideal to test if that of flying through the skies and shooting is your thing or not. But beware, there are more than 800 vehicles between airplanes, tanks and warships, not everything is to fly. And it looks great.
Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Android
World of Tanks
Do you like tanks? Do you like to destroy things with a tank? Do you like to blow up other tanks with your tank? Do you like free games? If you have answered affirmatively to at least one of these questions, ‘World of Tanks’ is what you are looking for, a very crazy MMO full of … tanks.
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
As I said at the beginning, in any good list of this kind that boasts a lot of games are left out. In this case they could have entered titles like ‘Arena of Valor’, ‘Pokémon GO’, ‘Clash Royale’ or ‘Smite’, to put a few more examples.
Now you have the comments at your disposal to recommend those F2P that are not here and that everyone should at least try.
