Aye, me hearties! September 19th marks International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Whether a seadog or a landlubber ye be, it’s time to brush up on your pirate slang and get ready to celebrate the funniest holiday in the calendar.
What is Talk Like A Pirate Day?
Talk Like A Pirate Day started out as a joke between John Baur and Mark Summers, two ordinary mates from the States. During a competitive game of racquetball, Baur let out a cry of ‘arrrggh’ when straining to reach a shot. They continued talking like pirates for the rest of the game. It was so much fun, that they promised to spend one day of every year talking to one another in pirate slang.
Initially, Talk Like A Pirate Day was something Baur and Summers celebrated between themselves. But in 2002, they happened to stumble across the email address of award-winning comic and author Dave Barry. Who better, the pals thought, to draw attention to Talk Like A Pirate Day and turn it into an official holiday?
Barry was surprisingly quick to respond to the friends’ email, and worked his magic to turn Talk Like A Pirate Day into the internationally-recognised event it’s become.
